The Rural Learning Center, a non-profit community organization in rural South Dakota, USA, has been making plans to build a conference and training center on Main Street in Howard, SD. You can help decide what the Rural Learning Center facility might look like and how it might be used. The first two-day design session (called a “charrette”) was held on Tuesday, April 29 and Wednesday April 30, 2008 at the Howard Legion Hall. We’ve held several design sessions since, and will hold one more large community session in October. The purpose of the charrette is to mix local wisdom and dreams with the expertise and experience of professionals to design a concept for the new facility. Architects from Koch Hazard in Sioux Falls, along with engineers, planners, and professionals from the lodging, conference, renewable energy and technology industries have been in Howard for the events. The idea is to gather the community, partners, sponsors, design professionsals and any other stakeholders around one table at teh same time. The results have been beautiful.
